Chris Matthews sours on Obama
President Obama “obviously likes giving speeches more than he does running the executive branch,” Chris Matthews said tonight.
Yes, you read that right: The MSNBC host who in 2008 felt a “thrill going up my leg” after hearing Obama speak has grown disenchanted. Tonight’s episode of Hardball saw Matthews delivering a rare, unforgiving grilling of the president as severe as anything that might appear on Fox News.

“What part of the presidency does Obama like? He doesn’t like dealing with other politicians — that means his own cabinet, that means members of the congress, either party. He doesn’t particularly like the press…. He likes to write the speeches, likes to rewrite what Favreau and the others wrote for the first draft,” Matthews said.
“So what part does he like? He likes going on the road, campaigning, visiting businesses like he does every couple days somewhere in Ohio or somewhere,” Matthews continued. “But what part does he like? He doesn’t like lobbying for the bills he cares about. He doesn’t like selling to the press. He doesn’t like giving orders or giving somebody the power to give orders. He doesn’t seem to like being an executive.”

On Tuesday’s program, Matthews similarly called Obama “a ship with the engine off.”

CNN Anchors Pretend They’re Having A Satellite Interview In The Same Parking Lot Funny

Yes, those are all the same cars. Apparently they thought we wouldn’t notice because Nancy is on the right side of the screen, when in reality she is to Asleigh Banfield’s left. See The Atlantic Wire‘s excellent breakdown of the shots to see exactly what happened. Tricky, CNN, very tricky. We understand, though. When a major crime story like the Cleveland Kidnapping breaks, you have to send in Nancy Grace. However, since Nancy Grace is a poorly-medicated vengeance demon who’s always just a bad morning away from ending up on her own show, you also send in a real anchor with whom she can “correspond.” Unfortunately, it’s hard to get shooting permits in Cleveland on short notice, so you set up in the same parking lot. Do us a favor, CNN, just put them next to each other and have them talk into each other’s faces instead of relaying their words through satellites to come back down 30 feet away like we’re idiots.

Bill Maher After Boston Manhunt: ‘This Country Is Becoming a Police State’
Bill Maher on Friday decried the massive show of force seen on Boston-area streets during last week’s manhunt for the remaining marathon bombing suspect, declaring that the U.S. is turning into a “police state.”
Speaking on his HBO show “Real Time,” Maher flashed images of police officers riding down the street in assault vehicles during the search.
“This country is becoming a police state and it is very troubling to me,” Maher said, later adding, “The British police don’t even carry guns, let alone have tanks.”
MSNBC contributor Robert Traynham noted that the heavy police presence was far from typical. “What we saw was a federal response after a horrific bombing,” he said.
ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel said, “We have cameras and our phones are being tracked and our cars are being tracked. We must want this, this must be something we want.”
Maher played eyewitness footage of the major police shootout in Watertown, Mass. just before 19-year-old Dzokhar Tsarnaev was taken alive.
“To me that’s out of hand,” he said. “I agree we shouldn’t have given this kid his Miranda rights because he probably had information. We wanted to take him alive…if you agree with that then what the cops did there was unprofessional. That’s called contagious fire.
Maher continued, “He has information and he was just lying in the boat, they knew that, they put that grenade up there. He wasn’t moving. It’s ridiculous. It’s out of control…

Rep. Pete King: Merchants Selling Ball Bearings, Beauty Products ‘Should Notify Police’
(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.), a member of both the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Intelligence Committee, wants retailers to tell police about people who buy innocuous items that could be used to make a bomb.
This follows reports that the Boston Marathon bomber used pressure cookers packed with nails and ball bearings to kill three people and maim dozens of others at the finish line on Monday.
“Obviously there’s always certain ways that security can be stepped up at an event,” King told MSNBC‘s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday.

Even though this was cleared up, the damage was done.
After finding itself embroiled in another controversy about edited video, NBC News has re-aired a clip its critics say was selectively edited.
On Monday, MSNBC’s Martin Bashir aired a video that seemed to show grief-stricken Neil Heslin being heckled by pro-gun lobbyists as he talked about his 6-year-old son, who was killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. While making a plea for gun control at a legislative hearing, Heslin at one point he turned to the audience and said: “I ask if there’s anybody in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question: why anybody in this room needs to have one of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high-capacity clips.”
When the audience remains silent, Heslin adds, “Not one person can answer that question.” And that’s when a few people recited the Second Amendment in response.
The video that host Martin Bashir aired, though, clipped out Heslin’s question and pause in the audience’s direction. The resulting edit made it look like boisterous audience members interrupted Heslin’s testimony.
